San Antonio, Texas

Some cities are just a joy to spend hours walking around – New York, Paris, and San Antonio! Through the heart of the city runs a series of waterways with walkways on either side and a number of bridges to allow access back and forth across the river. Shops and restaurants flank the paths and create a welcome shady reprieve from the hot Texas sun. If you love history, there is plenty to find beginning with the iconic Alamo.

Below you’ll find plenty of ideas for your own trip, including:

Things To Do

San Antonio is such a fun place to visit. Here are some of the highlights:

The Alamo

While our favourite outings tend to be ones that aren’t too touristy, we did find our visit to The Alamo to be worthwhile. Going first thing in the morning on a day in May meant it wasn’t too crowded. The kids really enjoyed the guided tour and the hands-on demonstrations about daily life at the time of the Texas Revolution.

San Antonio River Walk & Cruise

The River Walk is a 15-mile stretch of paths, tucked a level below the streets, that run along the river in the heart of San Antonio. Shops and restaurants flank the paths. It’s fun to explore by foot or by the many river cruises that exist, like the Go Rio River Cruise as an example. We didn’t stay until the evening, but the nightlife is said to be really fun in this area.

Other Fun San Antonio Stuff

Looking for more to do? Other places on our short-list include the San Antonio Zoo, Natural Bridge Caverns, Cave without a Name and the Japanese Tea Garden. For even more ideas or to see what’s happening around town during your visit, check out this San Antonio travel site.

Places To Eat

La Boulangerie

After our tour at the Alamo, we had built up an appetite! We stumbled across the nearby French cafe, La Boulangerie, and were really impressed with the delicious food and relaxed atmosphere. The kids even had a chance to practice their French with the owner!

Constantino’s

If you’re looking for a place to grab a hot and fresh pizza near the campsite, check out Constantino’s. The pizza was delicious and the kids enjoyed watching a popular animated film that they had playing on the TV while we ate. It was the perfect quick and easy dinner at the end of a travel day.

Where We Stayed

Hidden Valley RV Park

Located on the southwest edge of San Antonio is Hidden Valley RV Park. We loved the natural setting, spacious sites and friendly hosts. It’s always nice after spending time in a city to be able to retreat to a countryside campsite that’s only 20 minutes away from the city centre.
