Port Aransas, Texas

This seaside town is located on a barrier island in the Gulf of Mexico, by Corpus Cristi. At this point, we had travelled so far south that we were only a couple of hours from the Mexican border! Warm weather, salty air, sandy beaches and a relaxed vibe come together to create a genuine Caribbean feel right in the US.

Below you’ll find plenty of ideas for your own trip, including:

Things To Do

There is plenty to do in the beach town of Port Aransas. Here are some of the highlights:

Sunset Cruise & Dolphin Watch

Hop aboard a boat at Fisherman’s Wharf and head out into the harbour to enjoy a beautiful Gulf of Mexico sunset. With a little luck, you’ll catch some good glimpses of the local pods of dolphins feeding and frolicking in their natural habitat. We enjoyed watching the dolphins jump in the wake of the big ships (pictured above).

Treasure Island Mini Golf

Miniature golf can be a fun family outing, especially now that the kids are a bit older and their hand/eye coordination has improved. The mini golf course at Treasure Island Golf & Games was really well done with pirate theming and putting greens that wrapped their way through caves and up a artificial mountain structure.

Swimming, Beaches and Buggy Rides

The beaches along the barrier islands of the Gulf coast go on for miles and miles. We walked, biked, ran and played on the expansive, sandy coast. The kids also loved swimming in the pool at our campground. Renting a buggy to drive along the beach seemed to be a big thing to do, as well!

Places To Eat

San Juan’s Restaurant

We love mexican food and noticed immediately upon setting foot into San Juan’s restaurant that most of the clientele were people of Mexican descent. That was a good indication that the dishes would be authentic and delicious – and they were!

Virginia’s On The Bay

A great way to finish off an evening after having enjoyed a sunset dolphin cruise is to pop into nearby Virginia’s on the Bay restaurant to enjoy dinner or drinks on their patio. The atmosphere is fun, right on the harbour, surrounded by boats and with the saltwater smell in the air.

Where We Stayed

Gulf Waters Beach Front RV Resort

When we’re on the road, we will occasionally “splurge” on a more expensive campsite as an experience, knowing that it is balanced out by the weeks we stay at State, Provincial and National parks. This was one of those splurge weeks and, oh boy, was it worth it! The picture speaks for itself – Gulf Waters Beach Front RV Resort was incredible.
